Institute of Microelectronics of Barcelona (IMB-CNM-CSIC) (Spain)

The Institute of Microelectronics of Barcelona (IMB-CNM) is a technology-intensive research center under the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). It specializes in the design, simulation, fabrication, and characterization of scalable micro- and nanotechnologies, including radiation sensors and application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs). Within the scope of APECS, two IMB-CNM research groups are actively involved in different aspects of heterogeneous integration: the Radiation Detectors Group (RDS), which focuses on advancing technologies for radiation detection, and the Integrated Circuits and Systems Group (ICAS), which specializes in the design of application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs). Hosting Spain’s largest cleanroom facility, a designated national large-scale research infrastructure, IMB-CNM bridges the gap between advanced hardware research and industrial application. It drives innovation across high-energy physics, medical imaging, space instrumentation, and next-generation communication.

Joint Technology development by IMB-CNM/CSIC and Fraunhofer IZM

Collaborating with Fraunhofer IZM, IMB-CNM advances 3D heterogeneous integration. The partners develop innovative monolithic and interposer-based microchannel cooling concepts for high-density thermal management in high-performance computing and large-area imaging sensors. Additionally, IMB-CNM leverages high-resolution additive manufacturing (piezo-/super-fine inkjet and extrusion 3D printing) alongside laser and plasma surface treatments to fabricate customizable, eco-friendly 3D antennas and free-form circuits.
